Teacher Bill Henske describes the science and fieldwork behind the Dry Valleys Ecosystem Study from McMurdo Field Station in Antarctica. This presentation took place on 24 January 2023.
This PolarConnect event was broadcast live from the South Pole Station in Antarctica with educator Elaine Krebs and the IceCube and Askaryan Radio Array Team on 18 January 2023.
This PolarConnect event on Antarctica Day (December 1) 2022 was broadcast live from the Dry Valleys of Antarctica with teacher Lucy Coleman and researcher Rachel Morgan-Kiss.
How do we know what kind of phytoplankton are in the water? The Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB) is a robot that scientists use to image phytoplankton in the water. One IFCB can take up to 30,000 pictures per hour! The IFCB can be used in the field to detect plankton blooms in real time. In this activity, students will practice
From July 19, 2022, to August 15, 2022, I participated in the Harmful Algal Blooms in Arctic Waters research cruise on the R/V Norseman II. The Chief Scientist was Dr. Robert Pickart from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and the research team included scientists from WHOI, Oregon State University, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
This event with teacher Rebecca Siegel was broadcast live on 4 August 2022 from the Norseman II in Arctic waters. Rebecca is joined by team members from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute working on Harmful Algal Blooms in Arctic Waters.
This PolarConnect event with teacher Erin Towns and researcher Dr. Sarah Das was broadcast live from Ilulissat, Greenland on 10 May 2022. The team was working on the Greenland Subglacial Tremor Project.
Sarah Johnson and the IABP team broadcast live from Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow), Alaska on 5 April 2022. Sarah and the team discuss deploying buoys in the Arctic, what kind of data they are collecting and what it is like to live and work in the high Arctic in April.
In the October of 2021 when no expeditions were deploying due to Covid, the PolarTREC team sent out a survey to the 2019 and 2020 cohorts to identify how best to support them in further outreach (2019) or while waiting for their expeditions to deploy (2020). From that survey, the SEI (Success, Experience and Inspiration) Roundtable was created. Live events
As part of the Success, Experience and Inspiration (SEI) Roundtable, educator Jon Pazol gave his PolarConnect event to discuss the science and his experience as part of the Nansen and Amundsen Basins Observational System (NABOS) team. Jon spent 40 days aboard the Russian scientific research vessel Akademik Tryoshnikov in northern Arctic seas.
