This lesson includes a variety of research activities and a lab that all help demonstrate the science behind convection currents.
Objectives
Through the following activities and lab students will discover:
* that temperature and salinity affect the density of fluids (liquids and gases)
* how fluids with different densities interact with each other
This inquiry-based activity can be done using the slides of the attached PowerPoint presentation, or using a smart board. The slides describe the phases of the Inquiry Based Learning, step by step. The reference model is the "BSCS 5E model" (Bybee W. et al., 2006).

The Arctic Climate Modeling Program (ACMP) provides curriculum-based arctic resources for use with K-12 students. Resources include inquiry-based classroom lessons, a student network for observing arctic weather (S.N.O.W.) , digital lectures, and an interactive multimedia learning system (on DVD). The resources presented were all designed with input from 21 scientists from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute.
