Mr. Lampert!!!We hope you're having a good time in Norway!
And that you don't get stuck in a doorway.
And in the duration of your stay
we just wanted to know, 'por que?'
Why did you leave us?
We're having abandonment issues.
Okay, but on the real. Question.
How does it affect the animals/society in Norway that the glaciers are melting?
Or does it affect them at all?
Love,
Maggie and Ida

Adam Cumming & Emanuel KraynickQuestion 1: What is the temperature difference between noon and midnight.
Question 2: How much wet is it? IE: Is it cold enough that nothing much melts, or is there enough heat and friction that there is a lot of moisture. If so how much.(If possible to record)

Michael Lampert

nope! glaciers are not linear, they do not flow at the same rate all the time....some glacier can surge suddenly, this glacier on average might move about 10 cm a day.

Michael Lampert

great question, glaciers are different in various areas of the world...in oregon up on Mt Hood and Sisters you might find a tiny Cirque glacier, then in Alaska you might find a long valley glacier...or glaciers like this that empty to a fjord. or glacier ice caps or ice shelfs...
by definition a glacier is snow that has recrystallized to ice and has a downward slope.

Michael Lampert

they have a lot of equipment in the lab room, much like any science lab there are power supplies, electronics, pumps, heaters, pipes, ... you name it.. even a bike

Michael Lampert

I think I do knowthat students can glow
when they have knowledge in tow...
so that is why I am in Norway...now the animal question is tough... i think snowfall is pretty much the same now and that is what animals need... except animals in Argentina...and other countries where glacier melt is the main source of water..

Michael Lampert

there are cyclical temperature changes in the earth. day by day and season by season. i do not know how great they are in the ice. there is always a lot of moisture...it is melting all the time.

How big is the glacier that you are in?Trent and Morgan

Michael Lampert

thanks , great question, they try to go wireless, but they need cables to get power in. today we actually pulled last years cable out and it was completely frayed from glacier movement.

What is the biggest dangers involved with working with the glacier?-Elliott and Alex C.

What is the overall average temperature of the air under the glacier?Claire and Kim and John and Tyler

Michael Lampert

great question... for these researchers, who are below the glacier, the greatest danger comes from the rocks that are embedded in the ice. As they melt the glacier these rocks fall out. There was one very large rock that fell when no one was inside the other day, right by the entrance. For researchers on the top of the glacier, the largest danger are the snow covered crevasses.

Michael Lampert

we are working in a tunnel that is about 40 degrees, very comfortable. the food sits outside to keep fresh. in the shafts the temperature can be really uncomfortably warm from the hot water melt.

for the previous day (I don't remember if we posted the question or not): Where are you staying and sleeping? Are you by yourself and in the wilderness? Our next question:
What kind of food do you eat? (like preserved or anything special?)

Are there alot of sound reverberations or echoes underneath the glacier?Alex C. , Elliott

Are there any microrganism living in the glacier?Claire and Kim and Jon and Tyler

Michael Lampert

the glacier moves about a half foot a day.. I have not seen much of norway! been working till midnight constantly.

Michael Lampert

it looks incredibly awesome, it is all smooth walls from the melting, it is oozing all the time, a slow creepy movement that makes you wonder what will happen if you stay too long in the bat cave.

Michael Lampert

look at the word carefully and break it up.. svart is black isen ice... black ice. or actually dark ice... it has a deep blue to it

Michael Lampert

whoa, now that is an a plus question... believe it or not they take a car wash pressure hose and stick it at the base of the glacier, seal it, and let it go. the glacier slides a bit.

Michael Lampert

yep, you hear it cracking. and there is the constant rush of water down here.

Michael Lampert

the university of bristol was looking for this, I bet there are but I do not know for sure, just a bunch of flattened hedgehogs I think ..

Michael Lampert

i-dog i-phone i-maggie, i tried to place my hand on it and wait. I did not feel it move, but the next day you can see it has moved. so it is just slow enough to keep you waiting. kind of like the lunch line.

Michael Lampert
