I noticed that all these researchers are from all over so where is the funding for this expedition coming from?

Jamie Esler

Jacob,You beat me to it! I am planning on listing the providers of funding
for the expedition on the next journal entry. I hope you don't mind
seeing it twice.
Here is the break down:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a federal entity of the United
States that funds all sorts of scientific research with federal tax
dollars. Scientists wrote research proposals to NSF in order to try and
get funding for research. This is similar to how high school students
write proposals or 'applications' for scholarship funds to go to
college; only NSF research proposals are much, much, much longer and
more in-depth applications. NSF funded the University of
Wisconsion-Milwaukee and Iowa State University researchers, as well as
PolarTREC (my component of the team).
The researchers from Iceland, Norway, and Sweden were funded for this
project by the Icelandic Centre for Research (RANNIS); the Icelandic
equivalent of NSF. RANNIS is also a result of tax dollars. The
Carlsburg Foundation is a foundation started by the owner of a large
Danish company, and provided funding for much of the camping equipment
for research at Mulajokull.
Both teams used their research funds to collaboratively pay for
helicopter travel, food, lodging in Reykjavik and necessary equipment.
Jacob, this was an excellent question. I look forward to having you in
class again this year!
Mr. Esler
