The work of professor Bryon Crump, graduate student Natasha Christman, and PolarTREC teacher David Walker is highlighted in the weekly newsletter of the Oregon State University College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (On the Horizon).
KUT (Austin's NPR Station) news report (video, article, and radio) on PolarTREC teacher David Walker's Carbon in the Arctic expedition. The story aired on Morning Edition and Texas Standard in late-September, 2019.
It's All About Repetition!
In this lesson, we will learn what repeat photography is, and discuss how it can be used in scientific analysis.
Introduction
What is repeat photography? It is the taking of photographs from the same location, over time, to document changes. This tool has become extremely useful in science, as a qualitative way to
This PowerPoint presentation in Italian about polar antifreeze proteins was submitted as a capstone project by Laura Beltrami, a participant in the Cyber-based Interdisciplinary Science Education (C-ISE) Learning Course. This stand-alone presentation can be used to complement a Life Science lesson.
Students will conduct a demonstration that will help them gain a better understanding of the water cycle and runoff in a watershed. They will be able to replicate arctic and non-arctic watersheds by varying the size of the watershed. They will be able to visualize the difference in runoff by creating hydrographs of these different locations.
Students will investigate the breadth and depth of science taking place in the Polar Regions by reading and learning about one PolarTREC expedition and sharing it with the class.
Objectives
* To expose students to the wide variety of science happening in the Polar Regions
* To help students understand the process of science by examining one
This presentation features pictures, stories, data, websites and background information that complement the 2013 Bowhead Whale Calendar. The calendar contains stunning photographs and information from both traditional knowledge and contemporary research about the natural history of the bowhead whale.
This presentation, given by Robert Suydam, at the 2012 Arctic Ocean Ecosystem Workshop in Barrow, Alaska, is an overview of the resilience of the people of the North Slope with respect to their whaling history. The presentation showcases the history of both the science and traditional knowledge used in attempting to track whale population health and the ways in which
