Educator Allyson Woodard and the Permafrost & Community Team discuss permafrost and how members of the community of Telida are helping to collect data to study the science of permafrost in their Alaskan village. This presentation was broadcast live from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) in Portland, Oregon on 28 March 2019.
PolarTREC, funded by ARCUS (Arctic Research Consortium of the United States) and NSF (the National Science Foundation), brings educators to Polar Regions for immersive field work with researchers. This professional development opportunity allows educators to share real world experience with polar science in their communities, in the form of outreach and education. As an exhibit developer who
This one hour webinar event with PolarTREC teacher Carol Scott takes place at Kevo Research Station in Northern Finland. Carol and her researcher Kim Miller discuss arctic wetland dynamics.
This PolarConnect event was conducted with PolarTREC teacher Claude Larson, and members of the research team that she worked with on the Prehistoric Human Response to Climate Change 2010 project in Kamchatka, Russia.
This PolarConnect Event was held on 19 August 2010 with PolarTREC Teacher, Jim Pottinger, Nicolas Bayou (PhD Student at CIRES University of Colorado at Boulder), Katrine Gordham (Science Project Manager with Polar Field Services), John Augustine (NOAA), and Ken Jensen (Station Manager, CH2MHILL). They talked about living and working at Summit Station, including information about the Automatic Weather Station project
The journal assignment involves students in current science research. Through the teacher’s journals, they will learn about how the research teams work together, design their research, tools that are needed and how they live and work in an extreme environment.
Objective
Students will be able to:
1. Understand how scientific research is conducted in an extreme environment
Working in groups, students will use common materials to create layers of snow and ice representing thousands of years of stratification. Groups will exchange their ice layers and extract core samples to analyze them.
Objective
Notice the phenomenon of stratification.
Notice that layers can tell a story of change over time.
Live from IPY! event with teacher Jo Dodds and the research team in Summit, Greenland. The focus of the event was about the various snow studies being conducted at Summit. Note about the archive: The WIMBA archive has some audio. We had technical difficulties mid-way through and the audio got disconnected.
