PolarTREC teacher Ruthie Rodriguez and researcher Vanessa Lougheed discuss the research and ongoing field work being carried out by students from UTEP for the Research Opportunities in the Arctic for Minorities Program (ROAM2) from Utqiaġvik, Alaska.
A poster by PolarTREC alum Dan Frost describing the integration of Arctic research into secondary education through a field season in Svalbard. It details possibilities for curriculum building and outreach through Arctic field work experience.
This one hour presentation by Dr. Al Werner is a professional development opportunity for educators to learn more about earth and geoscience research in Svalbard, Norway. Some noticeable technical issues are resolved a few minutes into the presentation.
Share in the excitement of unearthing a biface and other archaeological treasures, as Alaskan researchers explain how they discover and document early human settlement sites across arctic Alaska. This video is part of a larger story on the Frontier Scientists website (http://frontierscientists.com/), the University of Alaska Fairbanks' portal for sharing the Arctic's newest discoveries.
Travel back in time as scientists and PolarTREC teacher Karl Horeis take you out to their dig sites to uncover hidden clues about early human settlement in arctic Alaska. The journal assignment involves students in current science research. Through the teacher’s journals, they will learn about how the research teams work together, design their research, tools that are needed and how they live and work in an extreme environment.
Objective
Students will be able to:
1. Understand how scientific research is conducted in an extreme environment
Working in groups, students will use common materials to create layers of snow and ice representing thousands of years of stratification. Groups will exchange their ice layers and extract core samples to analyze them.
Objective
Notice the phenomenon of stratification.
Notice that layers can tell a story of change over time.
