Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines have become key focus areas in the education community of the United States. Newly adopted across the nation, Next Generation Science Standards require that educators embrace innovative approaches to teaching. The Live from IPY event was held on May 5, 2008 with Katie Pena and the research team on the Nathanial B. Palmer Icebreaker in the Drake Passage between Chile and Antarctica. About 160 students and adults participated from about 8 different groups.
Kirk Beckendorf, along with researchers from the University of Wisconsin Madison are based at McMurdo Station, Antarctica and traveling around the continent maintaining automatic weather stations. About 300 students from about 13 states joined the event.
