Students will investigate the breadth and depth of science taking place in the Polar Regions by reading and learning about one PolarTREC expedition and sharing it with the class.

PolarTREC teacher Melissa Barker, a high school biology and environmental science teacher, shares her thoughts about her upcoming expedition to Toolik Lake, Alaska where she will learn about changes in water and nutrient cycles in the arctic tundra. Students will develop research questions that will help them develop an ecosystem profile (species/conditions etc.) of a local pond. Their results will be compared with data from the McMurdo Dry Valley Lakes in Antarctica. Discussions about climate and energy dynamics will be conducted as conclusions are drawn.
