In this lesson, students will conduct an investigation to discover how the behavior of hermit crabs change as water temperature changes.
Goals
Students will understand and practice the steps of a science investigation through an investigation about hermit crabs’ reaction to changing ocean temperature. Students will understand that as ocean temperatures increase some animals will adapt and some will
Senior Scientist Anne Jensen gave a presentation about cultural resilience and sustainability at the 2012 Arctic Ocean Ecosystem Workshop in Barrow, Alaska. Read more about her archaeological work here.
This article describes the work of a team of scientists using the latest in satellite tag technology to track the movements of the Weddell seal over the Antarctic winter. The project hopes to learn more about the animals as well as the ocean environment in which they swim.
Excellent interview and accompanying video about studies of Weddell seals in Antarctic. UC Santa Cruz marine biologist Dan Costa travels to Antarctica to study the winter foraging ecology of Weddell seals through the use of sophisticated satellite tags and physical examinations. Video footage and an interview with participants has been included here.
"The seal will capture all sorts of data: the temperature, the salinity of the water, how deep the seals dive and the pressure of the water and return that information via satellite and through this tag."
Read about Alex Eilers expedition to Antarctica to tag Weddell seals. It's hoped that information collected through tagging of seals will lead to a
Online version of the Eagle Times news article describing Frank Kelley's PolarTREC expedition in Barrow, Alaska. Frank Kelley, PI Anne Jensen, and the team are conducting archaeological studies at the Nuvuk site outside Barrow, Alaska.

The Surface Archaeology Activity will allow you to develop some of the knowledge and skills that archaeologists use to do their work while also getting a chore done at home. The steps are really easy, and then you can decide to maybe tackle another room in the house.
