Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, located about midway between Norway and the North Pole. This site explains the physical geography and geology of Svalbard in depth.
This geologic time calculator allows the user to manipulate the relativism of time to other markers. It builds from the classic analogy for illustrating the relative durations of parts of the geologic time scale is the yardstick.
Through activities, video observation, experimentation and the construction of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) students will learn about the chemical and physical properties of sea ice.
Objectives
Students will be able to answer main questions of where sea ice is, how it is formed, why the ice is important, how it is classified by indigenous people and scientists, how
Nature creates its own density column in marine systems, which is extremely important for the triggering of the spring bloom of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are an important food source for all organisms- from microscopic zooplankton to large marine mammals such as walrus and whales. The different salinities (and therefore, different densities) of water help to stabilize the water column (by limiting
Students are asked to predict what will happen to styrofoam objects lowered down to the bottom of the Bering Sea. Students make the appropriate calculations related to the actual experiment which took place on Maggie Prevenas' PolarTREC expedition.
Objective
Students will make hypotheses and calculations regarding deep sea experiments that took place in the Bering Sea on
In this activity students learn about varves, annual sediment layers found in lakes. Students will analyze authentic varve data from New England in order to correlate data from three different geographic locations .
Objective
Students will analyze authentic varve sediment data and create a graph of varve thickness. Students will use their results to make inferences about
This lesson allows students to use online mapping tools to investigate global snow cover changes. Students develop a problem statement about global snow cover and then use mapping tools to investigate their problem or question.
Objective
Students will become familiar with the data and tools used to analyze snow cover changes in order to answer questions pertaining
This article highlights the REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) Students upcoming fieldwork at Kapp Linne. The students, researchers, and PolarTREC teacher, Missy Holzer, spent a few days at the University Centre at Svalbard before spending 4 weeks at their field site.
Maggie Prevanas joined scientists in the Bering Sea where sampling to measure the productivity of the Bering Sea Ecosystem was conducted. Maggie learned about the role microscopic organisms, diatoms, play in algae blooms, carbon cycling, and global warming. Maggie developed a lesson using scientific illustration to introduce diatoms to her students.
