Nothing replaces the connections and relationships that are formed from in-person experiences. During three years of waiting, I was able to learn a little about particle physics, and start a relationship with researchers through virtual conversations. However, in a one-month expedition, I was able to learn and retain so much more information, and create lasting relationships with
This PolarConnect event was broadcast live from the South Pole Station in Antarctica with educator Elaine Krebs and the IceCube and Askaryan Radio Array Team on 18 January 2023.
In this investigation, students will measure production of CO2 from surface water and consider the role of surface waters in the global carbon cycle and climate change. They will gather data on using Vernier CO2 sensors. This lesson presents a wonderful opportunity for student-designed experiments.
This is a good lesson to get students thinking about the complexity of the systems involved in providing our society with energy, the consequences of energy use and efficiency. Students are encouraged to explore the data sets on their own, ask their own questions about energy use and present their findings to each other.
This outreach piece in Nature describes the aspects of bringing various guests on field science expeditions. The PolarTREC program is a focus amongst the programs providing some best practices as the author offers advice to scientists considering the addition of guests on expeditions.
PolarTREC teacher Michael League and researchers at the University of Delaware are examining tiny worms that inhabit the frigid sea off Antarctica to learn not only how these organisms adapt to the severe cold, but how they will survive as ocean temperatures increase. This article from the University of Delaware website outlines the research being undertaken to determine whether the
This event was a 1 hr overview of Marine Life Science in Antarctica by Annamarie Pasqualone for the CISE Fall 2011 course and other interested educators.
This PolarConnect live event is a one hour presentation by PolarTREC teacher Michael League and the research team studying Adaptations of Marine Worms in Antarctica. The team covers field logistics, what they have found, and what the next step is in the scientific process.
