In this lesson, students will conduct an investigation to discover how the behavior of hermit crabs change as water temperature changes.
Goals
Students will understand and practice the steps of a science investigation through an investigation about hermit crabs’ reaction to changing ocean temperature. Students will understand that as ocean temperatures increase some animals will adapt and some will
This lesson introduces students to the impacts of increasing ocean temperatures on marine life. Through this kinesthetic activity, students will learn more about marine ectotherms and what researchers in Antarctica have learned so far about how increasing temperature in Antarctic waters will affect their growth. Through the elaborate section of the activity students will connect what they learned about
Sun Journal article coverage of two Edward Little High School teachers's, Jenn Heidrich and Erin Towns, both selected for PolarTREC expeditions. Jenn Heidrich was selected to go on an expedition in Yukon, Canada, and Erin Towns was selected to go on an expedition to Ilulissat, Greenland.
In this investigation, students will measure production of CO2 from surface water and consider the role of surface waters in the global carbon cycle and climate change. They will gather data on using Vernier CO2 sensors. This lesson presents a wonderful opportunity for student-designed experiments.
This is a good lesson to get students thinking about the complexity of the systems involved in providing our society with energy, the consequences of energy use and efficiency. Students are encouraged to explore the data sets on their own, ask their own questions about energy use and present their findings to each other.
Emily Dodson-Snowden, a sixth-grade science teacher at Morton Middle School, didn’t have a typical summer break. She spent three weeks in Greenland studying how climate change influences plant/pollinator interactions and plant reproduction as part of PolarTREC (Teachers and Researchers Exploring and Collaborating).
This one hour event features the GLOBE Africa and Globe Seasons and Biomes expedition to Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa. Students and teachers that are on the expedition explain the different biomes they pass through on their way up to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
This one hour event features the expedition with the GLOBE Africa and GLOBE Seasons and Biomes program to Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa. Dr. Kenji Yoshikawa, from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, presents on the permafrost and hydrology features of Mt. Kilimanjaro while he is on the mountain.
