Hi Michael, I have enjoyed reading your journals. Your expedition seems like a lot of fun and must joggle your brain to see how " the other side lives". I am guessing I know the answer to this question... but I ask anyway. Are you allowed to bring home any pottery pieces that you find? Have a great trip and will try to catch you on the webinar. We are in the middle of finals that week! Have fun.. Elizabeth Eubanks PolarTREC '08

Dear Elizabeth:
I am not even allowed to pick up a crumb of fire-cracked rock and put it in my pocket.
Archaeology is much more tightly regulated than most other fields of research.  The Finns are no different in this regard.
It makes sense, because archaeological sites are the unlimate non-renewable resource, right?
The really good pieces (like the core I found and the axe head) do get kept, at the University of Oulu.  Most of the stuff we find we just leave in place.
yours always, Mike
