Hi Katey, I don't know if your still answering questions or not but I was wondering what scientists will use the map for once it is completed and when will it be finished?

Thanks so much!

Katey Shirey

The "map" will be documentation of the sources of high energy neutrinos detected by IceCube. Hopefully we'll be able to isolate spots with high neutrino activity and learn more about what's out there causing the high energy neutrinos. We suspect that the neutrinos will come from known and unknown sources. Effectively, we'll be able to look at the universe with "neutrino glasses" on and see what's out there. We'll be adding information to the map for at least the next ten years after IceCube completion which is wrapping up this year. So far we have lots of so-called candidate events-- where a muon has been detected in IceCube array and now they're analyzing the event to see if it's a high energy neutrino.
Thanks for your question!
