Hi Jo!

I bet your in transit to HOME! What a wonderful journey you took us on :)

Wondering about Musk Oxen, where did they get their name?

Also, one of the scientists on our ship talked about the beautiful warm clothing that is made by collecting the underfur of the Musk Oxen as they shed it. Do you know anything about it? Did you see any scarves or clothing made out of this yarn?

Thank you so much for your time and help in answering this question. Take your time, I still have a few weeks until school starts again at the end of July ;)

warmly,

Hi Maggie.  The musk ox leave the underfur, the ultimately soft hair, on bushes as they walk around.  This underhair is Qiviuk and you can buy knitted products made from it.  Everything was very expensive...hats, scarves, sweaters, etc. but really soft.  When we were hiking around Lake Ferguson on June 5, we saw the qiviuk hanging off of branches in the low bushes.I am not sure about the origin of their name; I will try and find out for you.  There is a Project WILD activity that focuses on musk ox and their behavior.  If you do not have access to it, I can send you a copy.  Let me know.
Enjoy your summer.
