Aloha Jillian and the Krill Seekers!

I remember learning that krill have the weird ability to 'molt backwards.' In other words, you cannot judge the age of a krill by its size. Is that one reason the krill team is harvesting the eyeballs, in order to correctly age the krill? Also what species of krill are they finding? How do the krill seekers tell the krill species apart? Do different species feed at different depths, or eat different things, or what?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

warmly, Maggie

Hello MAggie,Before I begin with an answer thought I would let you know the MSTs (Chuck) say hello.
Ok,  yes, to get an idea of krill age the lipofusion from the eyes is extracted. The krill species found right now are:
thysanoessa raschii
thysanoessa inermis
thysanoessa spinifera
thysanoessa inspinata         -   mostly omnivore
thysanoessa longipes          -   mostly omnivore
Eushausia pacifica
Also most likely they all feed in the same vacinity.   Tracy has this great Krill guide, amazing.
Thanks for reading!
