On October 19th I had the awesome opportunity to launch a weather balloon at McMurdo Station. A special thank you to the NPP MeteorologyMeteorology is the study of the atmosphere, weather and weather conditions. team for allowing me this opportunity.

Please take a few minutes to watch the video below to learn about the process of launching a weather balloon.

The graph below illustrates the data that my balloon collected. Warning, it is complicated and I don't understand everything that it means :) The "flags" on the right side of the image indicate wind direction and where the two dark vertical lines almost touch, the balloon went through a cloud.

Some additional facts about the weather balloon:

The weather balloon system costs about $200-300 to launch each balloon.

The balloon goes up about 300 meters per minute.

The balloon is filled with helium.

You might have said it in the video but what is the balloon made of? It wouldn’t happen to be biodegradable would it? I was so surprised by how FAST it flew up once you let it go!!!

The Balloon is mad out of latex and unfortunately it is not biodegradable. They used to but a return address on the unit to have it shipped back, but very few were returned so they stopped doing that at different launch bases around the world.

How long are the balloons typically in the air?

    Bridget Ward

2-3 hours is typical. During the weather balloon preparation people try not to touch the balloon itself because it can make weaker and it will pop sooner.

I lost a few brain cells looking at the graph.
