We had the great pleasure to spend a few hours at the University of Alaska Museum of the North. One room that really fascinated me was called The Place Where You Go To Listen. It is a quiet room filled with sounds and colors. The sounds represent different parts of the landscape and our world; deep throbbing characterizes seismic activity, bell-like sounds herald the aurora borealis, and a variety of rising and falling pitches track the myriad rhythms such as moon rise and the cycle of daylight and darkness. The exhibit synopsis describes it as "an ever changing musical ecosystem". Composer John Luther Adams created the exhibit, and it is linked to real-time occurrences so that the aurora borealis, for instance, can be "seen" through music, even in the daytime. Take a moment to listen to this 39 second video file.
