MOSAiC Expedition Update: 17 October 2019

Update relayed through WhatsApp from Katie

All people and gear have been exchanged to Polarstern. Tomorrow morning we will head due south, to take the shortest route through the pack ice. Once we reach ice-free water, we will turn West and make our way back to Tromso.

It is a time to celebrate a successful mission for the Distributed Network and to look forward to returning to family and friends back home. But it is bittersweet to say goodbye to the sea ice and especially to new friends made over the past 4 weeks who will now be on Polarstern for the next 2 months. We wish them all the best! There will be many challenges ahead for them, but I’ve seen over the last few weeks that this is a brilliant, dedicated, creative and kind group of people. If anyone can pull off research of this magnitude in a rapidly changing Arctic, this is a great group to have putting it all together.

    Ship to Shore!

This past week, ARCUS was able to connect Katie Gavenus with a classroom in Brevig Mission, Alaska. We were able to have over an 1 hour of time on the phone with her. You can view the archived PolarConnect event here.
