July 28, 2008 – Saturday – Emergency at Summit Camp!

*The call crackled over the camp radio at two minutes past eight this morning. "We have an unconscious man at the Balloon Barn, it appears he has been struck in the head with a block of falling ice!” called Chris the Medic. *

The staff sprung from their breakfast meeting and immediately went into action. Upon arriving at the scene, Ben and Steve assessed the situation and jumped in to administer first aid.

    Call 911!
When the need arrises, the Summit staff can respond to emergencies of all capacities.

"C-Collar for his neck…check his vitals” Ben barked.

"Careful with his back! Are you alright…can you hear me…do you know your name….” The questioning went on as they checked for signs of injury.

After bracing the victim’s neck and taping his stocking hat to the gaping wound on his head, they immediately worked on moving him to a back board.

The snowmobile screamed as it pulled the sled, medics and the injured person to the Green House to escape the cold and ensure the victim didn’t get hypothermia.

"Is this an evacuation injury?” called Kathy over the radio.

"YES…YES…THIS IS AN EVACUATION EMERGENCY”, Chris stated firmly into his handheld.

Once everybody was in the Green House and oxygen was administered, all breathed a sigh of relief...

"Great Job everyone,” said Chris the Medic,” That was a four minute response time and only 15 minutes till you got Craig out of the cold into the building. Now, let’s evaluate what went well in this drill and what we could do better next time!”

    It's Merely a Flesh Wound!
Chris the Medic got out his medical makeup and performed his handy work on my face to help make the training drill feel more authentic for the responders.

With no hospitals or immediate responders, the staff of Summit Camp uses scenarios like this to hone their first aid skills. If a real emergency were to occur, the staff would be prepared to respond to most any situation.
