Gerlache Strait in Antarctica
The hardest thing about putting together today's journal was narrowing down my pictures to just a few. Here is a smaller iceberg floating past the mountain range

In the wee hours of today our ship cruised into the Gerlache Strait. This is an awe-inspiring stretch of scenery and wildlife. It is named after a Belgian Lieutenant Adrien de Gerlache. He came across this strait in the beginning of 1898. It runs between the Antarctic peninsula and the Palmer ArchipelagoA chain of many islands.. Did I hear someone ask what is an ArchipelagoA chain of many islands.? Well, basically it is a chain of islands. Oftentimes they are volcanic. Anyone want to venture to explain that? The weather today went from cloudy to sunny to all out snow. The only constant was the beauty which was overwhelming all day and into the evening – as in 3pm when the sun was down. We had a chance to a good portion of the Lemaire Channel before the sun went down and the snow came with it. The straits and fjords down here are nothing short of spectacular. Whales like to hang out in them, penguins and seals as well. And wherever you go, you will see a variety of sea birds. We were treated to a plethora (yes, look that word up) of marine animals amidst some impressive mountains and glaciers. See for yourself…

    Gerlache Strait
This peak looks like it is on fire. It was a cloudy day but the sun was breaking through the clouds at just the right spot to treat us to such a sight.

    penguins in the Lemaire Strait
There were penguins everywhere when we entered the channel. Here's one group porpoising through the water. They leap across and dive making it all look so graceful. Seals do this as well.

Crab Eater Seal in Lamaire Channel
Where there are smaller, flatter bergs you will find seals resting atop of them. Here is a curious Crab Eater seal.

    Iceberg in the Lamaire Channel
Every iceberg has its own unique shape. Depending upon the light and how compacted the ice is you will see many hues of blue.

Humpback Whales in the Lamaire Channel
There were whales everywhere! Mostly we only saw their dorsal fins and a small portion of their bodies. These two were kind enough to dive down deep as we passed.

What can I say. Everything down here is mesmerizing.
