This morning was snowy, windy, and generally icky outside. However, even when the weather is less than stellar, it is still beautiful here on the North Slope in Alaska. Inside camp itself isn’t very pretty, but surrounding camp are lovely views of lakes, mountains, and endless tundra.

Here are a few of my views today.

Atigun comparison
One of Team Squirrel’s research sites at the Atigun River. The picture on the top shows the site on a clear day. The picture on the bottom is what it looked like today when we arrived to release squirrels. Both versions are pretty spectacular!

Moss and lichen on tundra
The variety of moss and lichen on the tundra are beautiful and fascinating. Caribou and reindeer like to eat moss and lichen. I just like to look at it!

Boardwalk on the hill just above Toolik Field Station. Kate and I took a stroll on the boardwalk after dinner tonight when the weather got a bit better.

I have asked several of the scientists if the views ever get old/routine after working in the area for a long time. So far everyone has answered with a resounding, “No!” I am glad to be in the company of people who appreciate the beauty surrounding us as much as I do!
