Passionate about land and water, Deanna Wheeler is inspired to make sure that "no child is left inside". Hands on, real science is her priority. From hatching, raising, and releasing yellow perch and horseshoe crabs to participating in a pilot sturgeon project, her students discover how connected they are to the world around them. Ms. Wheeler's love of learning and the outdoors meld together in her professional and personal life. She is dedicated as a teacher and as a citizen to better understand and protect the environment for positive impacts on individuals, the community, and the health of our environment. Ms. Wheeler cherishes time spent with her family, exploring, camping, kayaking, reading, and just having fun.

Hi Janet--

Many scientists were very interested in writing poems-- even though some were just too busy to really produce a final poem.

Hi Amber-
Yes, the scientist in the video did scrape the edges off because they were looking for parts per billion at times--very clean conditions were needed. We also did a gravity core where the containation was not an issue.

Hi Susan--
Any day in the Arctic is a great day, but we have had some fabulous days. I think I am spoiled with the sunny days. I can't even keep track of the number of rainbows and fog bow that I have seen. Today. the temperature was 57 degrees F.

I asked a scientist who dives in Antarctica and studies epi-benthic organisms. She says that there are very colorful organisms in the Antarctic. We are in about 39-50 meters of water here. Of course there will be different organisms at different depths but some of the same...{read more}

Almost all of the organisms are released back into the water. Several of the organisms are taken back to the lab for further analysis.
