Get Your Postcards Ready

In January 2016, I will be joining Dr. Burns and the Weddell seal research team for my third trip to the ice. We’re bundling up for the journey not only with gloves and coats, but also with several Antarctic-themed challenges, including the Postcards to Antarctica challenge!

Whether you’re new to the challenge or wanting to visit the frozen South again, our postcard challenge is a fun way to interact with the team during our stay in Antarctica. Last year, we took over 6,500 postcards to Antarctica, and we hope to have even more this year! You can send a postcard to family and friends or to yourself as a souvenir from the expedition. The postcard will be stamped with an official Antarctic indicia.

If you would like to send or receive a postcard from Antarctica, you can in two different ways!

Option 1: Buy a postcard at the museum…

The Pink Palace is featuring five great postcard options for you to choose from. These postcards are real photos of seals and penguins from last year’s expedition and are available for purchase at the gift shop. Each card is 50 cents and includes the price of the stamp. Please write all information legibly and decorate the card to make it unique!

Option 2: …or give us your own!

Submit your own stamped postcard with the complete address you want the postcard to be sent to from Antarctica and drop it off at the Pink Palace! Again, please write legibly and decorating is encouraged!

Note that if you do make your own postcard, the post office will NOT allow 3 x 5 inch cards. Cards must be between 3 ½ x 5 and 4 ½ x 6 inches.

If you can’t bring your postcard to the Pink Palace, mail the completed postcard in an envelope to us, so that you won’t void your postcard’s stamp.

From the Palace to the Ice and Back Again!

After I get your postcard, I will take them to Antarctica, and then mail them back to the address you provide! They’ll be your own souvenir of the expedition! Please send your postcards to me by November 6, as I will need time to collect and send them all to Antarctica before the team gets there in January! If you are unable to meet this deadline, postcards will still be accepted until December 8; however, an additional shipping fee may apply.

We are very excited to see how many postcards we receive this year and look forward to seeing how cooooool yours is! Thank you!

    Hello Alex,
I am looking forward to sharing the journal entries with my class. We had an activity in class on Thursday where students were trying to figure out a picture. Students kept guessing that it was a picture of you and the seals. Unfortunately, it was just one I found on the internet. I hope you will post some pics of you and the team.

Hello,I just found your postcard challenge 2015, and I know it's past the deadline of Nov. 6 but I'd still love to take part in this. It said additional shipping fees may apply after the deadline? I'm wondering how much it would be? I plan to mail the envelope with the postcard inside from California on Monday Nov 16. Please let me know and thanks!

    status: 1Hello!

That shouldn't be a problem - go ahead and send! And if you have less than 100 postcards there will not be an additional fee.

I look forward to receiving your postcards soon!

    All the best,

    Alex
