Time to get fit

Working in Antarctica is tough. Over the past two expeditions, I have learned that you need to be physically fit, so you can carry your equipment and safety gear while working in the field. I also learned that ‘bunny boots’ weigh about three pounds each! Wearing "bunny boots" is like walking around with weights – your legs can get sore very quickly. After learning and experiencing these things, I knew that before going back to Antarctica, I needed to get physically fit for my adventure.

Here I am getting physically fit! What exercises will you do to get fit?

Last year, the team and I challenged everyone to get fit with us as we prepared for our expedition. This challenge was a lot of fun, and I loved hearing about all the physical activities people were doing and the amazing things people were learning. So, we decided to challenge everyone again! Are you ready to get fit for this expedition and travel virtually with us to Antarctica? How far will you travel? Can you make it all the way to Antarctica?

Wait! Antarctica is how far away?!?

With this challenge the team and I ask you to – get fit – your mind, your body, or both and travel virtually with us to Antarctica.

How far exactly do you have to travel?

Well, we’ve calculated the distance between the Pink Palace Museum and the lab at McMurdo Station, and it’s a whopping 8,764 miles! That’s as the crow flies, if the crow could fly that far. Wow, that’s a long trip!

Memphis to McMurdo = 8,764 miles

    The Challenge

Now…here’s the challenge: For every minute you get fit through physical exercise or studying about science, you will travel a "virtual" mile toward Antarctica. After every 60 minutes/miles you complete, you will reach a new milestone – and you’ll love all the milestones. There will be 147 milestones on your journey, and at each ‘virtual’ stop you will discover interesting snippets about health, science, math and/or history.

Learn new facts at every milestone you reach.

    • Once you hit the ‘save’ button, scroll to the bottom of the page to see your totals.

    • For every 60 minutes you spend exercising or studying, you will reach a new point or mile marker.

    • At each stop, you will discover interesting snippets about health, science, math or history.

    • There are a total of 147 different stops on the journey, and you definitely will want to make sure to explore them all. One new “point” will be opened each weekday.
