This journal has been quiet…not much action. The United States Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Sea was broken – my expedition scheduled for January 2011…didn’t happen. I just received word within the past week that not only is the ship broken, it is being decommissioned by the US Coast Guard. It will no longer be used for icebreaking or any other operations. No ship = no expedition. Bummer.

However, the National Science Foundation requested the United States Coast Guard HEALY and the request was accepted!! We are GO for our expedition!! The timeline has been moved up as well! Our expedition is currently scheduled for November 7, 2011 through December 20, 2011! We will be home in time for Christmas! This is VERY EXCITING news!

    United States Coast Guard HEALY

Things will begin moving quickly now…6 months and counting!

Our expedition will debark from Seward, Alaska, make our voyage through the frozen Arctic waters and return to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. All of this happening in the Arctic winter…dark and cold. Searching for copepods – what do THEY DO in the winter?? I can’t WAIT to find out!

Please join our expedition…follow our journals! Ask questions…be curious and wonder! I look forward to being the link between the scientific research for this expedition and students and classrooms around the world!
