PolarTREC (Teachers and Researchers Exploring and Collaborating) is a program in which formal and informal educators spend 3-6 weeks participating in hands-on field research experiences in the polar regions. The goal of PolarTREC is to invigorate polar science education and understanding by bringing educators and polar researchers together.
Dr. Jacqueline Grebmeier presents an overview of the arctic ocean ecosystem. She outlines the key environmental factors influencing arctic marine food webs and discusses recent changes in biogeochemical cycles, biodiversity, migration and range of species, and general ecosystem health in the region.
Plan and run a family fun afternoon or evening with several hands-on activities. Students help run the activity stations and share what they have learned about the Polar Regions. A great culminating activity for a unit on the Arctic, Antarctica, or both, and a fun way to involve families in the learning experience.
