TEK TALKS is a series of webinars that was developed to foster understanding among scientists in regard to working with Indigenous People. View archived lectures and/or sign up for future lectures through the website.
What does it take to run a research station on the least habitable continent, thousands of miles from civilization? For those interested in Antarctica (and McMurdo Station) these are really nice interactive 360 degree and 3-D (for VR) web pages. To get the really cool 3-D experience, you will want to use VR goggles. As a note of interest Elaine
This video clip from from Alabama TV 13 News profiles PolarTREC researcher Dr. Samantha Hansen's work studying the history of landforms in Antarctica. Dr. Hansen will be one of a hundred scientists to be awarded the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers.
The seismic equipment that is being used for TAMNNET (studying the Transantarctic Mountains) was specially engineered for use in polar climates. Polar projects commonly require a level of support that is several times that of seismic experiments in less demanding environments inclusive of very remote deployments. This site offers great engineering insights, design drawings, and additional related links.
Newsday reporter Jennifer Smith blogs dispatches from Toolik Lake, Alaska about science underway at the research station, including the work of researcher Amanda Koltz on predatory spiders.
The CIMSS/UW-Madison Global and Regional Climate Change course for G6-12 science teachers has been translated to Spanish and is now available online. The translation was done by Juan Botella, a native Spanish speaker who teaches high school science in Madison, WI and a former PolarTREC teacher. Summit Station, Greenland Website. The station is located atop 3200 m of ice and is nearly 400 km from the nearest point of land. Summit supports a diversity of scientific research, including year-round measurements of air-snow interactions that provide crucial knowledge for interpreting data from deep ice cores drilled both at Summit and elsewhere.
Dayton's News Program, Fox 45 in the Morning, talks with teacher Chantelle Rose directly from the Arctic about her oceanographic PolarTREC expedition and follow-up involvement with the 2012 Arctic Ocean Ecosystem Workshop in Barrow, Alaska.
