Students will find an expedition within the PolarTREC archives and use the research to make a video explaining why studying polar science is important.
Overview
PolarTREC supports teachers on expeditions with real scientists to study in the field. Studying in the Arctic and Antarctic environments can be a harsh and rewarding experience. I participated in Operation IceBridge, an aerial study
This lesson is intended to help students make connections to polar science while discovering how and why sea ice drives deep ocean currents. Students will also learn key terminology related to sea ice and using actual salinity content charts, will graph a typical sea ice core’s salinity as it relates to depth.
Kate Miller is joined by IceCube undergraduate researcher, Samantha Pedek, in presenting at the Arlington Public Schools' Superintendent's Seminar.
Superintendent’s Seminar is a summer enrichment program for rising 11th and 12th graders who have demonstrated a desire for an academic experience. Approximately 30 students from across the district spend a week participating in activities focusing on this year's theme of
In this lesson, students will be introduced to the Standard Model, learning key vocabulary such as Fermions, Hadrons, Mesons, Baryons, Quarks, Leptons, particles, and anti-particles. In particular, students will come to understand what a neutrino is and why it is such a unique particle. This understanding connects to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory’s search for neutrinos in an effort to
WPLG Local News covers teacher Adeena Teres who received a Proclamation for participating in Operation IceBridge. The proclamation was given at her school in front of one of her classes by Commissioner Michael Udine and June 2, 2017 was designated "Adeena Teres Day".
Abstract
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines have become key focus areas in the education community of the United States. Newly adopted across the nation, Next Generation Science Standards require that educators embrace innovative approaches to teaching. Transforming classrooms to actively engage students through a combination of knowledge and practice develops conceptual understanding and application skills. The partnerships between
