Antarctic ecosystems are undergoing change at unprecedented levels. In this lesson, students will use real data to evaluate the effect of climate change on Antarctic fish. Denise Hardoy created this lesson plan after joining Dr. Anne Todgham’s team studying Antarctic Fish Development Under Future Ocean Conditions in October/November of 2019.
Denise Hardoy created this resource after spending five weeks embedded with Dr. Anne Todgham’s team studying the effects of climate change on Antarctic fishes in 2019. This lesson addresses one of the most difficult aspects of science for students - making sense of data.

I believe it is important to show my students what real science is… and that is how I found myself in Antarctica studying Antarctic Fish Development Under Future Ocean Conditions.
The PolarTREC program pairs teachers with research scientists for a symbiotic expedition. Scientists get a voice and a larger audience through the educator, and the educator
Cruise Report for the R/V Sikuliaq August 25-September 18, 2017, prepared by Dr. Carin Ashjian, Chief Scientist, and the SKQ201713S Science Team for the time PolarTREC teacher Lisa Seff was aboard and working on Upwelling and Ecology in the Beaufort Sea.
Article written for the East Hampton Star Newspaper on September 7, 2017, featuring teacher Lisa Seff aboard the R/V Sikuliaq in the Beaufort Sea studying Upwelling and Ecology in the Bering Sea.
Article run in the East Hampton Star Newspaper on February 16, 2017, about teacher Lisa Seff's participation in the expedition "Upwelling and Ecology in the Bering Sea" aboard the R/V Sikuliaq in the Beaufort Sea.
Teacher Denise Hardoy and researcher Anne Todgham discuss the research they have been working on looking at mechanisms that early life stages (embryos, larvae, and juveniles) of Antarctic fishes use to respond to changes in ocean conditions. This live event was broadcast from McMurdo Station, Antarctica on 20 November 2019.
Students will find an expedition within the PolarTREC archives and use the research to make a video explaining why studying polar science is important.
Overview
PolarTREC supports teachers on expeditions with real scientists to study in the field. Studying in the Arctic and Antarctic environments can be a harsh and rewarding experience. I participated in Operation IceBridge, an aerial study
Poster presentation about teachers and researchers working together as participants of the PolarTREC program and the benefits to both. The poster outlines my experiences as a PolarTREC teacher working with Operation IceBridge.
PolarTREC teachers Steve Kirsche and Adeena Teres presented to a group of teachers from around the state of Florida. This is the presentation that they gave at the 2017 Florida Association of Science Teachers (FAST) Statewide Conference on 20 October.
