Aloha Tom!

What a wonderful, fact filled journal! Keep up the excellent work of reporting, it is fascinating!

I noticed in a few of your pictures, you are holding birds. In wonderment I think, 'Isn't he afraid of getting poked, razored, or bitten?' Tell the truth now, are you wearing any protection against the birds' very sharp beaks? What tricks do you use so that the birds don't getcha?

warmly, Maggie

Hi Maggie,
Great to hear from you! I'll be truthful with you, we don't wear any
sort of gloves and the birds do bite you. Some like the kittiwakes
don't hurt really at all, the Crested Auklets gave a pretty good pinch
though, and I understand the murre bite can be downright painful, we're
starting murres very soon...
There are ways of holding the bird that will keep you from getting
bitten too much and to keep the bird from flapping around and getting
injured, the so-called "banders grip". I'll try to post a photo.
The mist nets are the toughest spot regarding a bite, because you have
to disentangle the bird from the fine mesh, so they're constantly
nipping at you, you just have to put up with it.
I hope that all is well with you in Hawaii!
Tom
