Hi Tom, I am excited to learn that you are spending some time on both St Paul and St George. I got much better acquainted with Tonia Kushin after our week in Fairbanks and she brought her 5th grade students on a trip "outside" to visit the Seattle area and Vancouver B.C. They came out to my school for a field trip with my class (see journal) and they are a great bunch of kids. I am sure that if you wander around St Paul and tell the 11 year-olds that you know Mrs. Peterson from James Monroe Elementary they will let you take a picture of a bird they took home with them. My principal would love that!
My older sister is following your trip with high interest as she is a birder of the first order. Any chance to learn more about the wildlife anywhere in the world will make her day.
Sorry we won't be able to touch bases in Anchorage (2 days off) but maybe at NSTA next spring?
Keep posting great journal entries and awesome pictures.

Hi Barney, I will definitely try to connect with some of the students that visited with you in Seattle!  All of these linkages are fantastic!  I had dinner last night with a scientist that Deanna interviewed on the Healy.  Pretty cool!
I know that you must be so excited to have your expedition approaching.  I'm looking forward to seeing your posts and photos from the field!
The weather has been kind of sloppy so I haven't brought my new camera out yet, but I'm hoping to get some good images of the seabirds here.  I think that your sister would love this place if she is a birder, it is truly like no other place that I've ever been.  You sometimes feel like you're at the birdhouse at the zoo, the birds fly by so close!
Cheers!
