Hi Mrs. Kaden and Mr. Miller - We would like to track your expedition with Google Earth. What were your flights from the U.S. to Chili? Where do you go after McMurdo? Thanks! Mrs. Sullivan and the 4th Graders in Mrs. Lambert's class.

Janet Warburton

Hi.The Oden can be tracked through Google Earth (however the sensor wasn't working recently). Here's the link they gave me that you use in Google Earth.
Let me know how it works!

Yes, Janet, the link you shared to track the expedition on google earth did work. I wish there were a way to see the ice around Antartica on Google Earth.  It did not look like the the Oden was actually near any ice to break! Thanks for the link. Google Earth is a fun way for us to interact with the expedition!  Laurie

Hello Barrett Elementary - I'm actually back in your neighborhood - my family and I drove back into Maryland from the Adirondacks yesterday when it started raining and messed up the snow for snowboarding  :-(    Here's my itinerary for the trip -
Dec 6 - flew from DC out to Salt Lake to talk with teachers about PolarTrec at the National Science Teacher's Conference there

Dec 9 - flew from Salt Lake to Dallas, and then from Dallas to Santiago, Chile.  From there we switched flights and flew down to Punta Arenas, Chile where we met the Oden.

Dec 12 - Dec 27 - enroute on the Oden to McMurdo Station in Antarctica

Dec 27 - took a helicopter for the last 12 miles off the sea ice to McMurdo Station, hung out at the station for about 7 hours then drove out to Willy Field, an ice airport about 10 miles from the station.  There we took a C17 transport to Christchurch, New Zealand - spent the night and the next day caught a series of flights home:
Christchurch to Auckland, NZ,  Auckland to Los Angeles, California,
Los Angeles to Chicago, Illinois, and Chicago to Rochester, NY

Then I met my family - did some driving up to the Adirondack Mountains for some skiing, and then drove back to our house in Silver Spring, Maryland just yesterday.

A bit shocking to have it be 70 degrees and feeling very summerlike in DC today - imagine I had to travel to summer in Antarctica just to feel winter - very strange.

See you soon!

Laurie Sullivan

Hi Allan - Welcome back to the "neighborhood". Thanks for the information about all the stops on your journey.  Yes! It was so strange to have a 72 degree day here in Northern Virginia on January 6! I enjoyed reading your interesting statement: "Imagine I had to travel to summer in Antarctica just to feel winter!"  :) Laurie
