You've found a lot of pottery in all of the middens you've excavated in the Kurils, and I was wondering, what color seems to be the most predominant?

KellyThe pottery that we found is not very "fancy" compared to what might be made today.  If you imagine just taking clay and forming it and firing it and then not painting it in any way - that's about what it is like.  Most of the pottery is very dark brownish, black, partly because it is made with dark materials and partly because it has been buried for hundreds of years.  It's not really very pretty as far as colors go, but sometimes it is very nicely made and decorated with cord marks or other texture on the outside.
