Early Spring Plankton and Benthos

Hi Deanna and team, It is spring break here in Arizona and a few students and I got together to follow along. We have two questions. -What does it feel like to walk on the ice? -What does it sound like as the ship breaks through the ice?

The pictures and videos are wonderful, ad we are avidly following along!

Walking on the ice has been different each day. The first time we were on very ice, there was very little snow so I heard a crunch as I walked. The last couple of times, there were drifts of snow, some crunchy sounds and some softer sounds. I hope to have an audio of the icebreaker breaking ice in the journals, so stay tuned for that answer.

I do where special boots to go onto the ice. I first was wearing my steel-toed rubber boots. They kept my feet warm for a little over an hour. While testing the ice, I do not move much. I am usually sitting on the snow with my toes in the snow. My toes get very cold. To warm them up, I jog around between tests. I tried various combinations of socks and insulators. I finally borrowed big, foam filled boots that work like bunny boots. They keep my toes cozy.
