We were wondering how Bobby, a high school student, was selected to join the Bering Sea Predators cruise?

Hi. Thanks for the question. I forwarded it to Jackie so she can respond.
It's been really neat having Bobby onboard the ship. He just flew home to Gambell this afternoon via a helicopter. We are just north of his home and so it was an easy way to get back! How cool is that!

Bobby Ungwiluk won a NOAA climate change award for a high school science project he did in 2006 on the impacts of climate warming in the Arctic. Bobby was given an award during his presentation in Anchorage, Alaska, on the day my article in Science came out describing the declining organic carbon supply and benthic faunal biomass at sites south of St. Lawrence Island that are part of our current study. I then asked Bobby if he would like to visit the Healy for a few hours when we were working offshore in May 2006. You can read about our 2006 expedition in the past expedition link on the TREC website, which included a middle school teacher from North Carolina and a science editor from Scholastic Magazine. Based on his past interest, we invited Bobby to participate in our research effort for a few days when off Gambell during our currrent cruise in 2007.
