Hi Jackie,

As a geologist, what did you think about the permafrost tunnel? Have you ever seen any phenomena like that before?

Kristin,The permafrost tunnel is a geologic marvel on many levels. I remember a talk on Mars Permafrost analogs on earth at a Geological Society of America convention, and there was a reference to Alaska, but it didn't register. I will definitely look for the talk next fall at the conference.
On another level, this is a perfect example of linkages between past and present processes on earth. Studying the permafrost tunnel will allow scientists to make predictions and develop models about Alaska and other permafrost areas in general.
