Ms.Foletta my name is Delaney and I am a student at your school... i would like to know what you think the coolest temperature you expierience might be

Peggy Foletta

Hi, Delaney. I remember you from when I substituted for your class a couple weeks ago! Thanks for asking your question. Right now, in Anchorage the high was 68 F and the low was 51 F! Pretty warm, huh? That's because we are at low elevation, next to the Cook Inlet from the Pacific Ocean and day length is really long, about 21 hours of sunlight! But when I go on the expedition next week, the temperatures will dip into the 30''s F, I'm told. We will be at high elevations and inland a bit.  I'll let you know because I will be taking daily weather measurements and posting them in my journal. When I was in Fairbanks, Alaska, last March the temperatures were much, much colder, down to -2 F!!! The day length was very short at that time of year.Mrs. Foletta

Hi Delaney. I have now finished my vacation and am working with the science team preparing for the field. We are organizing equipment and purchasing the food we must carry with us. Tomorrow we head out to the first lake.  The forecast is for rain.  We'll see how it goes.Mrs. Foletta

Peggy,Wow 87 degrees!!!
Sounds like its a good thing we had all of that cold weather training back in March.
I love all of your creative solutions for retreiving the bouy. There are bound to be some good science lessons in there somewhere.

Hi Kirk.  Yeah, 87 dgrees F was amazing!  Today it is again very sunny after a windy morning.  I haven't had to use the layers so much here as of yet.  Today we flew out of a remote lake via float plane, but it got too windy for the pilot to go back and get a lot of our gear.  So we are hanging out at a campground which gave us a chance to wash clothes, take a long-overdue shower, and use wireless internet.  We are going hiking in a little while.  Today is warm and relaxing.  Tomorrow we are supposed to fly to our third lake (if we get our gear).  Thanks for writing!Peggy

Is the food the travel kind in packets? How bad is the rain at the lake?

Peggy Foletta

We shopped at a grocery store for our food before we left Anchorage.  Meat is canned, tuna and chicken.  But we have fresh vegetables and fruit.  We put opened items into our "refrigerator" to keep cool.  Oh, our "refrigerator" is a bear-proof container that we put food into and then set it in the cool lake and put a heavy rock on it to prevent it from floating away. We have not had a lot of rain, but when it did rain, and it rained pretty steadily through the night, our tents held and we stayed mostly dry.  We have good rain suits for daytime rain and we have had rain while on the boat working, but it has not been too bad.  It's important to have the right kind of clothes, rain gear, boots, and good tents for rainy days.
