Yesterday we ventured to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum of the North. I learned about the animals that inhabit the Arctic region.

Looking at the faces below can you identify any of the animals?

Hello Bella,When I travel to Antarctica I will be only studying Weddell Seals, but I
hope to see and photograph other animals while I am there.

Cash,Most of the animals in Antarctica are marine animals and the largest
would be the killer whale, the orca.

pictures and videos, it will be like you are right there with me, but
    not as cold.

Great question Addison. The blubber is made from fats they get from drinking their mother's milk.

    Caity

    What are numbers #11, 12, and 13?
    Enjoying your pictures!!!

    Jaycie

What is your favorite animal that you've seen so far, and what is the coolest animal that you've seen so far?

    Bridget Ward

I think it is very interesting the polar bears have black skin, but white fur. There are many unique animals though.

I like how the walrus teeth are so long .

Photo 6 made me wonder- Do seals shed their blubber? Is their "skin" called blubber?

    Paul Le

Are these statues made with any real animal parts or are they artificial?

    Andy Nguyen

Was the Polar bear a full size model? How tall is the polar bear when standing up?

    TASH

what animal are you hoping to see other then seals

    Aaron Feinstein

Which of these animals is your favorite?

    Braxtyn Turner

This is amazing! I've always adored arctic animals, but never have seen all of these! These animals must be endangered, or rare!

    Bridget Ward

I really enjoyed seeing the reindeer during our lunch hike. I never knew that they stayed so close together, if one walks they all walk.

Hi Cereniti,My favorite animals is the sea turtle, though there are 7 different species, I love them all. Flamingos are a close second for me. I have spent a lot of time learning about tropical marine animals so I am excited and nervous to learn about polar marine animals. I am interested in learning about the Weddell Seals because I don't know much about them and find it amazing that they are warm blooded and can stay warm in Antarctica. I am usually cold so I am excited to learn their secrets :) They also grow really fast from pup to adult and I am really interested in that process.

    Bridget Ward

Walrus teeth can get up to 40 inches long and weigh up to 12 pounds EACH! Can you imagine your front teeth being that big?

    Bridget Ward

Hi Paul,The animals are Taxidermy, meaning that they are stuffed. Their skin and fur is real, their insides are stuffed and their eyes are fake.

    Bridget Ward

Hi Andy,The Polar Bear is full sized because it is taxidermy, meaning it once was alive, they remove the insides and stuff it. A female actually grows larger than a male. A female can get up to 6.6 feet and a male can stand up to 4.4 feet.

    Bridget Ward

Hey Tash,I am really hoping to see a penguin while down in Antarctica too.

    Bridget Ward

Arctic animals are really cute, but not all these animals are endangered can you find one that is not endangered?

What type of animals do you want to see on your expedition.

    Makenna

It must be cool to learn about all these different animals. I wish I was there to see them with you!

    Bailey

Have you seen any polar bears in Antarctica. If you have, how close were they to you?

    Lexi

What was your favorite part of the museum?

    Judson

Those are really cool pictures! I wish I could take a picture of them!

    Callen T. Minard

In photo one, I would like to ask what species of bear it is. In my opinion it does not look like a polar bear, for its face is to big and the polar bear's is thinner and more slim. I have heard of of polar bears and the North American Grizzly Bears meeting and creating offspring. Is this what happened? Or is this stuffed bear by a taxidermist some extinct species of arctic bear from the iceage? Thank you!

    bella

are you only studying seals while you are there or are you looking at other animals too.

    cash

    what animals are the biggest

    Sawyer

I am one of many Mrs. Lou's students but I hope you have a good time.

    Addison Sahrai

Seals are my favorite animal and also! What is their blubber made of?

    Monteanna Prince

Which animal out of the 15, was your favorite.

    Bridget Ward

Hi Bailey,I have not seen any Polar Bears in Antarctica. Though I haven't gone on
my trip yet, I will not see any Polar Bears because they don't live on
    Antarctica only in the Arctic.

Hi Judson,Practice taking pictures of animals around you and then when you grow up
and explore the world you will have the skills to take pictures of all
    types of animals.
