After more than 24 hours of traveling, I made it to Punta Arenas yesterday evening. I had dozed a little bit on the plane, but was totally exhausted. I think some of my students should be able to tell everyone what time the sun set in PA last night? Between the light and the excitement, it was hard to sleep. I wish I had - we have a full schedule today, and it was my last night on land sleeping for a long time.

Here's what we have on tap:

My version of a schedule that was given to each researcher from the US as they exited the Punta Arenas airport.
My schedule for my last day on land.

202 Didn't figure out when the sun goes down but we saw the context clue in the next sentence about how it was still light out late into the evening. We looked at the map and James found it is about 6,500 miles to Punta Arenas from New York City. We all say good luck!

202's next question was how many flights did it take you to get there? and Where did you stop along the way?

Hi guys! It took three flights to get to Punta Arenas- I went from NYC to Dallas, Texas, and then from Dallas to Santiago, Chile (this was the longest flight), and then from Santiago to Punta Arenas, Chile. I stayed in a hotel in Punta Arenas last night, and tonight I am sleeping on the ship. I lost a coin toss with my roommate and have to sleep in the top bunk, which means I have to climb a ladder to go to bed. It is just starting to get dark now around 11:00PM so I'm going to literally climb into bed. The boat leaves tomorrow, so I won't be standing on land again for almost 60 days!!

Thanks for the cool links, Linda! I'm going to share these in the next journal post so my students can see them as well.

Hope you bought along an eye mask for sleeping! You will have your sea legs pretty soon! How is the weather so far?

I was hoping for a little taste of summer before we headed south to Antarctica, but our weather in Punta Arenas wasn't great- gray and chilly most of the time. I'm going to try to keep a running record of daily highs and lows, although our temperature extremes won't be as dramatic as those experienced by the scientists working out on the continent. I bet there will be many days when it won't be that much different than Brooklyn or Guilderland.
