I just got finished packing for what might be the most exciting adventure of my life. My bag is ridiculously packed with not only items for Antarctica, but also New Zealand. After my six weeks in Antarctica, my wife will be meeting me in New Zealand, where we will be spending sixteen days exploring the south island. This weekend has been simply extraordinary. It began by me having a half-day of school on Friday for records day. I was able to use Friday as a transition day to introduce my long-term substitute teacher, Mr. Justin Newcomb, to my students. I am thrilled to have Mr. Newcomb as my sub as he is currently a laid off teacher that I have taught with for two years. My worries are alleviated, as I know he not only has the knowledge to teach my students, but the ability to utilize the technology to bring my PolarTREC experience to the classroom.
Last night I was humbled by a going away party with all of my friends at my home. They were all so excited to hear about the research I will be participating in. A number of my buddies even opened Twitter accounts just to follow my trip! Later this evening, I will be attending my going away dinner with my family. We are all meeting to celebrate my departure, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight........ Let the adventure begin!
