We are heading south towards the Amundsen Sea! We should be back in the ice sometime tonight (correction, we are on the ice now!). This is exciting because we get so see more penguins and seals, and, best of all, we might get to walk on the ice for a couple of hours if the weather is good. We have scheduled a two hour break on the ice for Monday morning; I wonder how my body will adjust to a non moving surface. But as I wrote, it all depends on the weather, so we might be disappointed.
Todays entry is a short one. I am working on a piece around Alex's talk today and need his input. He is on the night watch, so his comments will come late for today's posting. Meanwhile here is a recently sighted iceberg.
We have stopped science work until morning morning when we will get to the continental shelf. We were to be sampling along this transect, but this is the section that got cut after so many days lost to bad weather. This waters have been sampled in the past, but no one has gone to the shelf because ice conditions prevented previous expeditions. We hope to be the first to get data from there.
A ping-pong tournament is schedule to begin tomorrow to keep people busy during the long steam. I will not make it far, but at least I am guaranteed two matches of at least two games each. I do not think the luck that helped me in the assassin game will help me on this one.
¡Vamos rumbo al sur! Estaremos en el hilo hoy por la noche (corrección, ya entramos en el primer parche de hielo) Esto es emocionante porque volveremos a ver pingüinos y focas, y lo mejor de todo, quizá caminaremos en el hielo por un par de horas, si el estad del tiempo lo permite. Hemos puesto en el calendario un par de horas del lunes por la mañana para tomar un descanso en el hielo; me pregunto como responderá mi organismo a una superficie estática. Pero como escribí arriba, todo depende de que tan buen día haga. Espero no nos desilusionemos.
El diario de hoy es breve. Estoy trabajando en un escrito sobre la plática que nos dio Alex hoy y necesito sus comentarios. Tendrá que esperar hasta mañana, ya que Alex está en el turno de la noche. POr lo pronto les muestro un iceberg reciente.
No hay muestreos hasta el lunes por la mañana cuando llegaremos a la plataforma continental. Deberíamos estar muestreando en nuestro camino al sur, pero cancelamos este transecto para recuperar el tiempo perdido por las incesantes tormentas. Estas aguas han sido muestreadas con anterioridad, pero nadie ha muestreado la plataforma continental por las condiciones del hielo. Esperamos ser los primeros en obtener muestras de la plataforma.
Mañana inicia un torneo de ping pong que nos mantendrá ocupados durante la travesía al sur. Yo no llegaré lejos, pero al menos tengo garantizados dos partidos con un mínimo de dos juegos cada uno. No creo que la suerte que me ayudó en el juego del asesino me rescate esta vez. Ya les diré como me va.
