Northern Finland has very little of the monumental public architecture from past centuries past that we expect to find in England, France, Germany, or even southern Scandanavia. Most of it looks more like Alaska than Europe. Everything is modern and utilitarian.
A happy exception is Oulu Cathedral, easily the most impressive and most visible building in town.
Built in the 19th century, it isn’t medieval. But its proportions and color are pleasing to the eye and well suited to its site.
The inside is spacious, cool, quiet and comfortable.
