Packing is a hard job. It seems easy, but it never is. Make a list of what you need for the trip, get all of your stuff together, and as efficiently as possible pack it into a suitcase. Simple right? Not so! I have looked over my list and gotten advice from people who have been to Greenland. That should make the process easy but it doesn't. I have never been a light packer. I am the type of person who likes to be prepared for every scenario. All of my clothes are folded and sitting in my guest bedroom. Layers are essential for a place where the weather can vary. Also, inside will be heated so I have to prepare for that and be ready for freezing temperatures outside. I have long underwear, different weight shirts and jackets, jeans and comfy pants, a snowsuit, warm boots, heavy socks, workout clothes, sneakers, pajamas, and toiletries. Told you I can’t pack lightly!
Looking over my piles I have reshuffled my clothes many times trying to make a final decision of what will go into my bag. Once I have made my final decision, the trick is to make sure it all fits. My father, former boy scout, has trained me in the art of rolling instead of folding my clothes and stuffing socks into shoes. This isn't my first international trip but I feel like I'm stepping into a world that I know little about. A world of ice is a place where most people don't go. I have looked up the weather in Thule Greenland for April and I found that in general the high is around -13°C that's about 8°F and at night the minimum temperature is around -20°C, that's -4°F. It should be warmer in Kangerlussuaq (Kanger), but I have read that in Kanger the temperature can change drastically from nighttime to daytime and from day to day.
I don't think I will ever feel ready but I am going to be brave and start packing! Please comment if you have any suggestions of what I should bring.
