TODAY'S JOURNAL:
The first of September brought even more snow this morning, this time with enough accumulation to morph many of the ship's deck surfaces from black to white. I was enjoying the view from the bridge when I got into a conversation with SN Evan Burgeson about the names of things around the ship. There are seemingly endless specialized objects, parts, and equipment aboard a ship and many have colorful names. The ones with animal-related names caught my fancy, and I decided to put together a virtual scavenger hunt for you to try from a little photo safari I went on this morning. From the list of animals below, try to match up the object who's name relates to an animal. For example, a crane is both a type of animal (a bird) and an object on a ship used to lift heavy objects. OK? Here's a list of animals I could find with objects aboard borrowing their name:
- Crane
- Pelican (Pelican Hook)
- Elephant (Elephant's Foot)
- Bull (Bull Nose)
- Dog
- Monkey (Monkey's Fist)
- Wildcat
- Mouse (Mousing)
- Bird (Windbird)
And here are the pictures. Good luck with your photo matching quest!
SPECIAL FEATURE:
We in the southeastern Canada Basin, heading east towards Banks Island to try for another piston core sample. We are about to the edge of the abyssal plain, with our coring target site on the Banks Rise. If we continued east past our coring site we would then pass over the Banks Slope and the Banks Shelf before arriving at Banks Island.
Sketch a sea floor profile of this west to east path from the Canada Basin's abyssal plain to Banks Island.
That's all for now! Best- Bill
