Here we go...
I’M GOING TO THE SOUTH POLE!
Those are words I never thought I would say. There are 53 days until I board my flight (first of many) to get to the southernmost point on the planet. A lot has already been done to prepare, but there is still, what feels like, an infinite amount of things left to check off of my to-do list.
First and foremost, HELLO! Thank you for stopping by and joining me on this journey. I’m Jocelyn and I spend a considerable amount of time on stage, in a pink lab coat, doing cool science experiments with a penguin lab assistant. My love of science and theatre have blended perfectly to create my touring science show called “Jargie the Science Girl!” We are based out of California, but within the last year, we have started touring all over the country...and now to Antarctica!
I first heard about PolarTREC, ARCUS (Arctic Research Consortium of the United States) and the IceCube Lab on July 2nd (yup, only 3 months ago!), through an email that came from our website. Dr. James Madsen reached out to me after seeing an article about Jargie on an airplane- I was shocked on two counts! After a couple of meetings with him and an interview with the PolarTREC team, I was confirmed to start the preparation process. Normally the process takes about a year, but my timeline is much shorter. Thankfully, everyone at PolarTREC has been absolutely wonderful to work with and have answered all of my questions (sometimes multiple times).
Going to the South Pole is...hard to imagine. It is one of the most remote places on Earth. How do you prepare for that?!?! With the help of a great team, of course. In my next post, I’ll go into a few more details on what has been done to prepare and what is left to do, but for now, here are details of my quickly-approaching trip to the SOUTH POLE. Have I said that enough?
-I will be gone approximately from November 24th to December 28th.
-I will fly from Los Angeles → New Zealand → Coast of Antarctica → South Pole
-My actual dates at the South Pole are subject to change based on weather conditions
-Elevation will be 9,301 feet
-I will be arriving during the Summer season: temperatures ranging from negative 19 to negative 14 degrees Fahrenheit

¡VOY AL POLO SUR!
Esas son palabras que nunca pensé que diría. Hay 53 días hasta que abordo mi vuelo (el primero de muchos) para llegar al punto más austral del planeta. Ya se ha hecho mucho para preparar, pero aún quedan, lo que parece, una cantidad infinita de tareas pendientes.
Primero y principal, ¡HOLA! Gracias por acompañarme en este viaje. Mi nombre es Jocelyn y paso mucho tiempo en el escenario, con una bata de laboratorio rosa, haciendo experimentos científicos geniales con un asistente de laboratorio de pingüinos. ¡Mi amor por la ciencia y el teatro se han combinado perfectamente para crear mi gira de ciencia llamada "Jargie the Science Girl!". Tenemos nuestra base en California, pero en el último año, comenzamos a hacer giras por todo el país ... y ahora ¡el Polo Sur!
La primera vez que escuché sobre PolarTREC, ARCUS (Arctic Research Consortium of the United States) y IceCube Lab fue el 2 de julio (¡sí, hace solo 3 meses!), a través de un correo electrónico. El Dr. James Madsen me mando el mensaje después de ver un artículo sobre Jargie en un avión. ¡Me sorprendió dos veces! Después de un par de entrevistas con el equipo PolarTREC, se confirmó que comenzaría el proceso de preparación. Normalmente el proceso lleva aproximadamente un año, pero yo tengo mucho menos tiempo. Afortunadamente, todos en PolarTREC han sido absolutamente maravillosos para trabajar y han respondido todas mis preguntas (a veces varias veces).
Ir al Polo Sur es ... difícil de imaginar. Es uno de los lugares más remotos de la Tierra. ¿Cómo te preparas para eso? Con la ayuda de un gran equipo, por supuesto. En mi próxima publicación, entraré en algunos detalles más sobre lo que he hecho para preparar y lo que queda por hacer, pero por ahora, aquí están los detalles de mi viaje que se acerca rápidamente al POLO SUR. ¿He dicho eso lo suficiente?
-Me iré aproximadamente del 24 de Noviembre al 28 de Diciembre.
-Voy a volar desde Los Ángeles → Nueva Zelanda → Costa de la Antártida → Polo Sur
-Mis fechas reales en el Polo Sur están sujetas a cambios según las condiciones climáticas
-La elevación será de 9,301 pies
-Llegaré durante la temporada de verano: temperaturas que oscilan entre los 19 grados negativos y los 14 grados negativos Fahrenheit
