    PermafrostPermanently frozen ground.

The PermafrostPermanently frozen ground. Tunnel is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers since the 1960's. PermafrostPermanently frozen ground. refers to ground (soil, dirt, and rock) that stays frozen for two or more years. The tunnel is getting wider and more soil is dropping to the floor due to sublimation; a process where a solid goes directly to a gas. Have you ever noticed that sometimes your ice cubes in the freezer are smaller than the other ones? This is due to sublimation, the ice cube (solid) goes into a gas. This results in a smaller ice cube.

The Pleistocene pungent earthy smell in the tunnel is very memorable, but the sight of fossils, ice wedges, ice lenses, and more overshadows that. This is a must see.......sooooo.....look at the slide show below.
