Get the popcorn ready. It's time for a movie. Well, a short movie. A video clip from trawling to be exact. Thought you might be interested in some live action excitement from the high seas. Now that I'm back on station, I can upload some videos, so get comfy, sit back, and enjoy.

    Fish Trawling in Antarctica
This is a shot of the trawl coming up from the bottom. Notice all the seagulls that are eager to be part of the catch. They try to feast on the animals that we throw back in after getting the fish out of the trawl net.
But first, a few words of explanation/narration. The first part of the video shows the back deck where we fish. You get a peek into the aquarium where the fish are caught. You will notice that the marine techs are connected to a line. While they make their job look easy it is actually quite risky. Standing at sea level, no guard rail, bringing in a very large, heavy trawl and communicating with the winch operators up in a booth and one on deck. You will notice Jeremy communicating through hand signals. It is really loud back there so there are hand signals for the winch operators. There are a few sizes of winches. Once the trawl is up, we swing into action, quickly untying the net, sorting out the fish and throwing everything else back in. We put the fish in the black tubs immediately then transfer them to the aquarium tanks so they are out of water as little as possible. As I've mentioned before, some amazing animals come up - octopus, sting rays, sea stars, polyketes, you name it. If you are looking for me, I'm the one in the orange jacket, blue gloves, and hardhat. And last, but not least, a BIG thank you to Harry Snyder who shot this video while we unloaded the trawl. http://

When we fish on the boat, we fish a 24 hour schedule. I was on the Midnight to Noon shift. The best part of that is watching the sunrise when you are out at sea. Really nice!

(Okay, so I have a white hardhat and I'm on the left when sorting the fish)
