So what is there to do at McMurdo?

McMurdo is like a small town. But the community has to make a lot of their own entertainment because there is only limited access to television and internet. The entire bandwidth for the station is likely less than what your house has. My webcasts use up about 15% of the station's bandwidth. Luckily, there is plenty to do around McMurdo.

    Dorm Room
The dorms have a TV but the number of stations is limited.
There are a lot of hiking trails. You can check out cross country skies, fat tire bikes, or snowmobiles (after appropriate training).

There are often science lectures and entertaining talks given by the scientists, artists, or journalists that pass through McMurdo. In fact, most folks are more than happy to talk about their research or job at McMurdo.
    Science Talk
There are lots of fascinating speakers! Hey look ... It's my supervisor, Jim Madsen. Nice talk, Jim!
    Science
    Science is everywhere here.
There is a coffee shop that shows movies from time to time and the residents of McMurdo are very creative. There is a knitting club one can join, there was recently a ping pong tournament, and also an art show.
    Art Show
One of my favorite pieces at the art show!
The residents of McMurdo are very creative. There are numerous charity events, just the other day there was an event that supported Doctors Without Borders as well as a few other charities, it was called mustache roulette. Folks with facial hair had people bid on the ability to shave their beard/moustache in whatever way they saw fit. One resident had his 47 year old moustache shaved off ... quite the price to pay for charity.
    Applesauce
    Like I said ... creative.
Currently, there is a bit of excitement that the ice breaker is pulling in. Over the course of a few days it takes several passes through McMurdo Sound to clear the ice. It is common for wildlife to follow the ice breaker in. I haven't seen much yet, but the seals are a bit more active than they have been, so I am hopeful.
    Ice Breaker
The Ice Breaker. It is seen here breaking ice. Hence the name.
Anyway, if you ever get down here don't expect to be bored, there is plenty of good natured fun to be had.

    Seal
If you ever get bored there is always seal watching. I think this guy is making snow angels.

For the science lectures, do they all pertain to Antartica or are some just general awesome things going on in the field of science globally? And which ones been your favorite so far? I just watched an awesome video about the future of genetic engineering and wanted to know if you guys watched stuff like that up there. Keep having fun, Mr. Thuma!

    Trevor Hunsanger

Mr. Thuma, how is the view around you? are all of the trails easy to access and close and safe.

Are there any full-time residents in Mcmurdo? Or are most of the people there scientists and researchers. If there are any full-time residents do they have families, and are there any schools?

    Eric Thuma

There are no full time residents. Some people do winter over but they aren't here the whole year. There are a lot of scientists and researchers but there are lots of support people, carpenters, cooks, electricians, cargo processors, fuel technicialns, and many others. There are no schools becasue there are no kids but there is a chapel and a fire station.

Have you had any time to partake in any of the activities yet? If so, which ones? The hiking trail at Arrival Heights looks interesting. Is that all loose rock on the trail?
Also, what is being displayed in the photos from the art show?

    Josh cowdrey

So you won the applesauce chugging contest right?

    Eric Thuma

I have gone to all of the science talks that I could. And this place is so beautiful that I have spent most of my free time hiking. I'll check on the name and title of the piece from the art show.

    Eric Thuma

The trails al have about an inch or so of pulverized, weathered rock on them, So you have to be careful where you step.

What is the biggest surprise and the biggest let down of the bottom of the world?

    Eric Thuma

So far i haven't been let down. I talked to a lot of people that gave me a good idea of what to expect while I'm down here. I have been surprised that it is actually pretty easy to get accustomed to 24 hours of daylight. I don't think I'd want to try getting used to 24 hours of night though.

Have you had any free time to explore around? also you should use that limited internet access to skype 4th hour instead of 6th

    Eric Thuma

Mostly, the talks are given by the folks down here about their own research so they all pertain to Antartica but not just to Antarctica. There is a lot of research that can be best done or only done here but have broader impact. My project, for example, is really studying the way the Sun works. It happens in Antarctica because its easy for particles to get through the magnetic field here but it's really about broad, fundimental solar astronomy. That is just one example of many though.

    Eric Thuma

The view is the best I have seen anywhere. The trails are fairly close and reasonably safe. But some trails require that you hike with a partner and check in and out at the fire station so they can respond if something happens. You have to make sure to check back in though because they take their job really seriously and rescue efforts start fast because time is a major factor. Crevasses are a real danger too so it is important to stay on marked trails only and never wander off.

    Eric Thuma

I had a little time to do some hiking. I wish I could have arranged to Skype with 4th as well. Really I wish I could have pulled off every hour!.
